How to password protect a PDF

Prevent unauthorized access to a confidential document in a few seconds.

Why protect a PDF?

A contract, a payslip, or a medical file sent by email can pass through several servers before reaching its destination. A password ensures only the intended recipient can actually open it.

Choosing a strong password

Avoid obvious passwords (birthdate, first name); a mix of letters, numbers, and at least 8 characters remains the basic best practice.

Step by step

Upload your PDF on the Password Protect page, enter and confirm your password, then download the encrypted document. It will now require that password every time it's opened.

Sharing the password safely

Avoid sending the password in the same email as the PDF; a text message, a call, or a different channel limits the risk if either is intercepted.

FAQ

Can I remove the protection later?

This tool adds protection; it doesn't currently offer a way to remove it, so keep an unprotected copy if you'll need one later.

Does the password also protect against copying the content?

No, it only protects opening the file; once opened with the correct password, the content is viewable normally.
